Updates and due dates

Hello Science Peeps,

About the friction lab, it seems that some groups are not sharing information incredibly well and cooperating to get the discussion answers finished up.  You are reminded that the data may be copied (& procedure to some extent) and shared but the other work (procedures, discussion questions, and abstract) should be in your own words. That being said...you should analyze and discuss your answers with your group!
DUE DATE remains: Wednesday, Nov 21st 2012.  For assignments handed in next Monday, Nov 26th expect a 10% penalty.

Your science journal also remains due tomorrow along with the analysis of motion transmission and transformation from today`s class.

Today`s lesson is on motion systems, hope you did your facile homework! For further review, check out the online animation at the CDP website.

End of Term Smoke Bomb!

Hi Science 4,

Hope all your materials are in as the official last day of term is today!

Now, about yesterday...the good news is that the smoke that many of us breathed in on Thursday is not toxic... it is an irritant that could lead to coughing, and red eyes.  So what was that stuff anyways?

Basically, it was a science demo that got away.  Pure phosphorous is a non-metal that reacts readily with oxygen to form P4O10 (also known by its empirical formula P2O5 and name diphosphorous pentoxide).

Here's the chemical equation

           4 P (s)   +  5 O2 (g)  -->  P4O10 (s)

Small pieces of white phosphorous are usually chipped off a stick and as it is exposed to air an OXIDATION REACTION occurs.  The phosphorus combines with oxygen from the air to make P4O10 "smoke."  The reaction also releases  heat (it's highly exothermic) and produces light.  If too much reacts at the same time, we get issues!

Interested in seeing more???

White phosphorous has been used in warfare as it ignites quickly and it makes a lot of smoke.  If a piece of white phosphorus came from a grenade or bomb and got on/into your skin, it would burn you and leave tissue damage. There are many cases of civilians being hit by white phosphorous bombs and being covered in white phosphorous leading to severe burns and death.

Have a safe and smoke free day!

Keeping up to date

Hello Science 4... please note that there is a new tab that links to all the journal topics that need to be done... but to be very honest, you should be able to get the topic while in class or very often by checking the slideshows.

It might be a good idea to :

  • do journals sooner that later while the topics are fresh in your minds
  • take a look at old slideshows as a study aid.

About half the class has not done the facile learning assignment for materials... what's up?

We're working with the materials unit and we'll be using helmets as an example of how materials are put together to perform a function. Below is a video that explains a few things about concussions (which is related to the topic of helmets)... we'll probably see it in class today (Oct.15th), here's the video below...

New unit on deck!

Hi Science IV,

As the option unit draws to a close, we should announce where we are going.  The next unit as described in your course outline will be about materials.  We will look at the properties of those materials and the forces applied to technical objects around us.  The next few weeks are all about engineering so put on your hard hats and rev your engines.

Your facile learning assignment is to do the following topics and the quizzes at the end.  You will be given marks for completing the quizzes and scoring well. The deadline for completion of this assignment is Tuesday, November 9th @1pm.

Facile Learning - Lesson 8 - Engineering

  • Topic 1 - materials (part 1)
  • Topic 2 - materials (part 2)

Journal Entry & Some videos to check out

Journal #5
Chemistry All Around Us

Today, we have looked at a few examples of physical change (where no new matter is created) and chemical change (where bonds are broken and reformed to make new substances that are chemically different).Focus Question #1:Briefly reflect on the examples of physical & chemical change that you saw today (from video or demos)Focus Question #2:Describe at least 5 examples of chemical change that we see in the environment and/or our daily lives.

Two videos... the first one was used to review physical vs. chemical change and it was applicable to Journal entry #3.

The next video is an extra about global warming and it's an add on to the topic of combustion.

Welcome to BPS Science Rocks (August 29, 2012)

Hello Secondary 4 Applied Science & Technology... Welcome to a new school year. This page will be used to make announcements and act as a launching pad for our resources (see tabs above). So one of the first things I should ask for is... a student volunteer. We are looking for a student IT manager who is willing to post their notes and other materials to a sharing website for all students. I can lend a scanner if needed but the student would need to have decent internet access and be responsible. If you're interested, send an email to brian.hodge@essb.qc.ca You have 3 items to work on today. 1. fill out the survey below. We need to get some information about you so that we can contact you when needed and to adapt the course as necessary. 2. go to FACILE learning and login. The next few classes will be about ecology, so navigate to: Sec IV Science & Tech --> Lesson 6 "Earth, Space and Ecology --> Topic 14 Ecology. Click through all of the topic and do the quiz by or before Friday, August 31st.
